Foot & Ankle Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)

Traditional open surgical treatment of many foot problems often involves large incisions.

Bunion Correction

Bunion correction straightens the big toe, reduces discomfort, and improves overall foot alignment. Advanced techniques ensure less pain and faster healing, helping you walk comfortably again.

Lesser Toes Correction

Lesser toes correction addresses deformities like hammertoes or claw toes to restore natural alignment and relieve discomfort. It helps improve balance, reduce pressure points, and makes walking more comfortable.

Conditions

Mr Akimau Can Help Treat

Bunions

More than one third of people over the age of 65 have bunions. It affects ladies twice as much as men. Many people live with this condition without any trouble. For many others however this stubborn lump on the inner side of the foot creates significant trouble when shoes become more and more difficult to ware, and the big to continues to progressively drift laterally causing lesser toes deformities, forming painful callosities and drastically reducing quality of life. For these patient corrective surgery is the only reliable option to help the trouble.

I have introduced a revolutionary minimally invasive bunion correction surgical technique to the North Midlands area and treat all of my bunions with this advanced surgical technique now. It involves cutting and resetting bones in the foot through small skin incisions using special instruments and implants. Many patients are delighted with the surgery and specifically on how quick and minimally painful the recovery is.

Big Toe Arthritis

8% of the population suffer from arthritis in their big toe. This condition develops slowly and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that affects both walking and resting. One common symptom is a painful bony lump at the base of the big toe. Shoe modifications can be helpful. In more severe cases, surgery is often needed. The two most commonly performed procedures are fusion, which removes the diseased joint and uses metal implants to create a stable and pain-free big toe. I ln some cases minimally invasive joint sparing surgery can be done to allow toe motion. I regularly perform both of these techniques.

Lesser Toe Deformities

Many individuals suffer from deformities in their lesser toes, which can pose significant challenges due to their chronic nature and intricate characteristics. These deformities can impact one or multiple toes, resulting in pain and difficulties in wearing shoes comfortably on a daily basis. As an expert in this field, I routinely treat patients with conditions affecting their lesser toes. During our consultations, we thoroughly explore the available treatment options. Surgical correction, in particular, presents a formidable task as it entails addressing various complexities, and maintaining the corrected position can be arduous. Thankfully, substantial advancements have been made in tackling these persistent issues, particularly through the utilization of minimally invasive surgical techniques. In certain cases, patients may need to have protruding pins in their corrected toes for several weeks, whereas in others, the use of metallic implants may prove unnecessary.

Heel Bumps

Heel bumps or Haglund deformity occurs where the tendon connects to the heel bone, called the calcaneum. It typically presents as a painful bony lump at the back of the heel, causing significant pain and making it uncomfortable to wear shoes. Some patients can well respond to a targeted injection of shock wave therapy. More often than not surgery is required. The valid surgical option is to shorten the heel bone through tiny skin incisions to relieve to pressure from a diseased tendon on diseased bone. It is called MIS Zadek’s osteotomy and has a very high success rate. I am the sole surgeon in region who performs this technique regularly .Patients are able to walk straight away in a special boot for about 4 weeks. Pain commonly improves over the course of several weeks.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that affects the base of the sole, making it difficult to walk. It is common, affecting 1 in 10 people, particularly active working adults between 25 and 65 years old. The main symptom is severe pain during the first few steps in the morning. Treatment options include systematic stretching exercises, night splints, injections, and shock wave therapy. In cases where simpler measures fail, surgery is a good option. This straightforward operation involves releasing a small band of tissue at the back of the knee, and patients are able to walk immediately after the procedure. I regularly perform this surgery and patients are delighted with the outcome.

Achilles Tendon Rupture

Being the strongest tendon in the body, the Achilles tendon is unfortunately also the most frequently torn. This type of injury primarily affects individuals between the ages of 30 and 50, particularly those who participate in sports as “weekend warriors.” In fact, approximately 25% of these cases are initially misdiagnosed.

Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles tendon, the strongest tendon in the body, is often affected by active and sporty individuals. Unfortunately, it can become diseased, causing significant discomfort and impeding everyday mobility, which can greatly impact quality of life. In fact, endurance runners have a 52% cumulative risk of developing a condition known as Achilles tendinopathy during their lifetime. Non-insertional or midportion tendinopathy affects the tendon itself and often responds well to a structured, robust program of stretching exercises that need to be done over several weeks. However, at times it can be a stubborn problem. Treatments such as injections and shock wave therapy can be helpful. In some patients where non-invasive methods don't work a day case operation releasing a small portion of muscle behind the knee can give long term symptoms relief. This surgery has 95% success rate in stubborn planta fasciitis cases.

Flat Foot

Flat Foot is a condition where the arches of the feet collapse, causing the entire sole to touch the ground.
I offer comprehensive assessment and minimally invasive treatments to correct alignment, reduce pain, and improve stability and walking comfort.

Ankle Arthritis

Ankle Arthritis causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the ankle joint due to cartilage wear or injury.
I provide advanced diagnostic evaluation and personalized treatment options  from medication and physiotherapy to surgical correction  to restore mobility and relieve discomfort.

About Me

Mr Pavel Akimau MD, PhD, FRCS Tr&Orth

Consultant Foot & Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon. Mini Invasive Surgery Expert.

The great Leonardo da Vinci once said, “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.” I am constantly fascinated by this beautiful and intricate mechanism, with its complexity and challenges. With 33 joints, 28 bones, and hundreds of other structures, it enables us to move.

Unfortunately, there are many potential issues that can arise with its different parts, significantly impacting our quality of life. These problems can take various forms, from agonising ankle arthritis to stubborn bunions, misaligned toes, and Achilles tendinopathy, among many others.

Some of these can be alleviated with simple measures such as stretching exercises, insoles, shock wave therapy or injection. Others, however, may require surgery and a significant recovery period.

If you are suffering from painful bunions, misaligned toes, ankle arthritis that affects your mobility, persistent heel pain, or any other foot-related issues, I can provide expert assistance through minimally invasive surgery. Don't hesitate to visit me for a consultation.
